How We Select Our Picks for Best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi
To help you make the decision, we tried out the some of the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gis to give you a full breakdown when purchasing this vital piece of BJJ apparel.
As always, we have members of our team test out each Gi out in training, drilling, hard sparring and where possible, competition.
We then compile our list based on their feedback and determine the best BJJ Gi brand and style within each category.
Be sure to read our considerations for choosing the best BJJ Gi to make an informed decision on your needs.
How to Choose the Best BJJ Gi for Your Needs
1. Determine Your Budget
Your budget determines which range of Gis you can look at, so it’s always the first thing to consider. You’ll generally need about $80 to spare if you want a new Gi at the cheaper end of the price. Premium Gis can be $300+ dollars.
Keep in mind that just because it is expensive doesn’t mean that it’s the best.
However, you in general get what you pay for, so a cheaper Gi certainly won’t have the longevity of a more premium Gi.
You don’t want to skimp out unless you have no other choice, but there is no need to throw down the extra coin where there is a perfectly good BJJ Gi for under $100.
Be sure to shop around for deals too.
Whether you purchase the best BJJ Gi on Amazon or from a different vendor, make sure to check for the best pricing before breaking the bank when you could have found a better deal.
2. Choose Your Comfort Needs
Of course, you want a comfortable Gi for your body type.
This may depend on a number of factors including weight, length and even the climate you live in.
For instance, if you live in Phoenix Arizona or Las Vegas Nevada then you probably want to search for the best BJJ Gi for hot weather, with will be a lighter weight Gi like the Gameness Air Pro 2.0.
If you live in North Dakota, consider something thicker like the BJJ Religion Genesis Gi
In hotter climates, opt for a lighter Gi with thinner fabric. For colder areas, consider thicker Gi options.
If you tend to have sensitive skin, a higher GSM weave is usually more comfortable.
You can always opt to wear a no Gi BJJ rash guard under your Gi if you find the rougher manufacturing is uncomfortable.
High-end hemp Gis made from a hemp fabric blend or even bamboo fabric offer the most comfort at a high price.
3. Check Mobility & Gi Sizing
It goes without saying that you want to be able to move easily when rolling. It’s essentially a requirement that you have the flexibility in your kimono to execute your BJJ techniques.
As such, you need to consider the mobility of your Jiu-Jitsu Gi.
Generally, modern pearl weave BJJ Gis are fairly mobile provided you purchase the right size of Gi.
Check our Gi sizing chart below if you are unsure of your Gi size and want to find the perfect fit.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi Size Chart
Be aware of Gi jacket fit around the cuffs, elbows, chest, and shoulders.
For Gi pants, ensure you have comfort around your hips and knees.
Premium weave Gis sometimes offer more mobility within the fabric weave.
4. Decide on Durability
Ideally, your BJJ Gi should be durable to avoid having to regularly purchase a new Gi, especially if you train hard.
Single and double weaves are the primary Gi fabric options, and each has their advantages, but double weave is more durable.
It needs to hold up in long training sessions, sparring and especially competition. You don’t want to be in the middle of a match and the seat of the pants rip open.
Features like reinforced stitches and double weave fabric lend more durability to your Gi at the cost of weight and price. However, having a Gi that can last a long time will save you money in the long run.
5. Consider Whether You BJJ Needs to Be Competition-Legal
Some Gi colors and styles are not permitted in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition rules.
On top of the Gi sizing requirements that your sleeves extend to your wrist bone when your arms are out to the sides and that you’re pants are the appropriate length, you often need a blue, black, or white Gi depending on the competition.
Make sure your Gi is IBJJF legal if you plan to compete in those tournaments.
Most of the Gis on our list are IBJJF-legal, but be sure to check the descriptions when choosing if competing is in the realm of possibility along your Jiu Jitsu journey.
Now that you’ve thought about the above considerations, let’s dive into some top picks for BJJ Gis.
Price: starts at $120 USD
Color Options: white, black, blue
- Very lightweight
- Excellent mobility
- Resistant to tears
- Rough material on exterior fabric
The Gameness Air Pro Gi 2.0 is the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi from an all-round perspective, including price and durability. It’s suitable for BJJ competition as well as general training. Our team purchased the black version for Jordan, but it also comes in white and blue.
The reinforced ripstop pants are mobile enough for effective footwork movements but have enough strength to ensure they withstand sparring sessions and competition matches against all your toughest competitors.
It definitely does not come in first in terms of softness, with 300 GSM majority-cotton fabric feeling rough on the exterior in particular, so I definitely recommend people wear rash guards to protect against chaffing.
However, the roughness can sometimes help in competition by increasing the difficulty of grips on your collar.
Thankfully, this Gi remains light enough for BJJ training to be comfortable and breathable in any environment, rough fabric notwithstanding.
While it’s not the cheapest Gi, at $120, it’s still fairly affordable overall with a high-quality that will stand up to more wear-and-tear than lower cost options.
Our reviewer, Jordan, purchased the Gameness Air Pro BJJ Gi in February 2023, and despite training many classes and putting it through competition, it still appears very new. It remains his current go-to kimono for training BJJ.
Price: starts at $110 USD
Color Options: white, black, black/black, blue, navy
- Easy to maintain
- Drawstring could be better
First up on our list is the Fuji All Around BJJ Gi. Fuji is one of the best known brands in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, so it’s no surprise that they would top the list in the best beginner BJJ Gi category. This BJJ Gi is a great example of a no frills, straightforward approach to the Gi. After several sessions rolling on the mat, the general consensus is that this makes for a great first Gi for just about anyone.
In fact, its performance was good enough for us to recommend it for an inhouse loaner BJJ Gi. Men and youths on the team both found it to have great mobility and breathability with the weave. One of our taller guys did find that it was a bit of a short cut, but he has a pretty sizable reach compared to others on the team. Some did say it felt a bit heavy for their liking, but that is probably a personal taste issue. All in all, Fuji doesn’t usually disappoint with their products and this Gi is no different. This is a good buy for any entry level BJJ practitioner and will likely end up in your Gi rotation for years to come, even when you upgrade Gis.
Price: starts at $110 USD
Color Options: blue, white
In the number one spot for the women’s best beginner Gi, BJJ staple Fuji makes it again with Blossom Womens Jiu Jitsu Gi. While Fuji may not be known as the best BJJ Gi on the market, it doesn’t disappoint for those in the entry level and upper intermediate level on the mat. Even then you will likely see a few black belt practitioners rotate them in during training to give their more expensive Gis a rest. The Fuji Blossom is everything you need and nothing you don’t in an entry level womens Jiu Jitsu Gi. We did get reports that it was a bit heavy for some of the team’s taste and that it may be a good idea to account for shrinkage when you buy.
The color is definitely vibrant and didn’t fade after multiple washes. The embroidery art is a nice touch as well, without being to “look at me, look at me” if you know what I mean. Reports among our female practitioners were fluid mobility, breathability was on point and the overall comfort level while rolling was good. If you are looking for the best affordable BJJ Gi for women, the Fuji Blossom is our selection. It’s also an all around great BJJ Gi to have in your rotation, even at higher levels.
Price: starts at $130 USD
Color Options: Black, white
- Pants need to be broken in
Coming in as our top pick for the best BJJ competition Gi for men in 2024 is the Progress Featherlight Competition Gi. This may not be one of the BJJ Gi brands you are terribly familiar with within the lexicon of BJJ, but it certainly didn’t disappoint. We put this one through its paces in hard sparring and emulated competition matches. Reports are that this lightweight Gi allows for incredible mobility, breathes well in extended training sessions and its durability stands out – making it a great choice for competitions.
This could also be the best BJJ Gi for tall skinny guys in terms of competition. One thing that was noted is the pants need a bit of breaking in before they become comfortable. So these may not include the best BJJ Gi pants out of the box, however you could probably just do a couple of extra washes to speed up that process. Minus that minor hiccup, the Progress Featherlight ticks all of the boxes to make the top of our list as the best BJJ competition Gi in the men’s division.
Price: starts at $96 USD
Color Options: white, black, blue
- True to size
Not everyone out there can spring $170 for their first Gi, even if it is the best BJJ Gi out there. Every guitar player has probably been in a place where they had to buy a budget guitar just to keep gigging. Well if guitars were Gis, the Progress Academy BJJ Gi is just the one you are looking for when you need to keep rolling but don’t have the coin.
Keep in mind that this BJJ Gi shouldn’t be washed or dried in high heat unless it fits a bit big on you, because it shrinks. In terms of quality for the price, it’s hard to beat. Will it hold up through several tournaments? The jury is out on that one, but our team found it to be comfortable and durable enough for everyday practice use. So if you are in a financial pinch, this is the best BJJ Gi for you here in 2024. This is also perfectly suitable to have as a rotation Gi if you are looking for the best BJJ Gi under 100 dollars to fill in for your premium or competition Gis in practice.
Price: starts at $109 USD
Color Options: white, blue, black/blue, black/yellow, black/pink
- Color Choices
- Sales Branding
- Hashtag makes you feel like a walking billboard
Fuji makes its way onto the best BJJ Gi list yet again with the Submit Everyone Womens Gi. We’ll get the bad stuff out of the way on this one first, the name is a bit ridiculous. Even more ridiculous the #submiteveryone sewn into the trim everywhere.
Like really? Am I now a walking advertisement for best BJJ Gi Reddit or Twitter or something? Other than the over the top branding, this womens Jiu Jitsu Gi doesn’t disappoint as an all around budget Gi.
The fit is spot on in terms of sizes and it’s comfortable in intense rolling sessions and sparring alike. Colors aren’t really important in terms of BJJ, but the choices were appreciated amongst the crew. There were a few reports that the shoulders were tight, but given time they loosened up and allowed for proper mobility while rolling. Overall Fuji does it again and produces our top pick for the best BJJ Gi for women in 2024, so you may want to add this one into your competitive Gi rotation even if you aren’t on a budget!
Price: starts at $180 USD
Color Options: white, blue, black
- Great fit
When it comes to the best Gi, BJJ enthusiasts and the overall community will not be disappointed in the Vulkan Pro Evolution. This is a BJJ mens Gi that is truly designed with the athlete in mind. Durable with a great fit around the shoulders, light and comfortable making it perfect for the ones who prefer wearing rashguards under their Gi. From top to bottom, side to side this mens BJJ Gi is worth the money if you want a premium product. The pearl weave makes for a nimble, breathable feel that benefits the user in long training sessions and competition alike.
Whether your color preference is in shades or navy blue, the look of this Gi is matched by its quality and performance. Yeah, you are basically a rolling advertisement in this thing with Vulken branded dead center, front and back – but that’s something uniform amongst BJJ Gis in 2024. If the Pro Evolution is in your price range, you would be hard pressed to find a better choice. From fabric to fit, materials to design, this is all around the best BJJ Gi to have in your gear bag in 2024 if you don’t mind the price tag.
Price: starts at $170 USD
Color Options: white, blue, black
What can we say, Vulkan as a company comes through on all levels in terms of the premium Jiu Jitsu Gi for female athletes. Rolling in this Gi is an excellent experience. From the comfortable stitching, breathable cotton material, to the well designed top (doesn’t feel like you are rolling in a winter jacket) and many other factors. The Women’s Vulkan Pro Evolution is the best BJJ Gi out there in the premium category – prices be damned!
What it lacks in color selection it makes up with a combination of lightweight feel, plenty of mobility, overall comfort and true to form sizes. Sure there are others with flashier designs out there in the premium range and the logos are a bit tacky, but this Jiu Jitsu Gi is perfect for beginners, intermediates and pros alike. In martial arts, Gis don’t get much better than the Pro Evolution. If money isn’t an issue and you need a killer everyday Gi, then you need look no further!
Price: starts at $188 USD
Color Options: white, blue, black
BJJ Religion’s Genesis Pro Gi is what you would expect from the company. It may not be the best BJJ Gi for the price, but it certainly isn’t the worst either. It holds up well in lengthy training sessions and sparring alike. This might be the best BJJ Gi for muscular build out there right now which is a plus. Even the thicker BJJ practitioners out there will find this BJJ Gi easy to move in.
Like so many other Jiu Jitsu Gis out there, I don’t see why you need your brand taking up what seems like half of the Gi unless you are sponsoring me – but that seems to be the regular deal these days. There is also a rather tacky stitching pattern that sticks out like a sore thumb and rubs a little according to a couple of the team. Is it the best BJJ Gi for the money? Probably not, but it still deserves an honorable mention on our list of the best BJJ Gi options in 2024
Price: starts at $176 USD
Color Options: white
- Breathes well
- Sleeve length
The Tatami X Reorg Jungle Jiu Jitsu Gi may be a bit of a tongue twister to say, but it’s probably the best BJJ Gi for beginners that didn’t make the top of the list. It breathes well over long rolling sessions but probably isn’t the best BJJ Gi for competition in this price range. The dark green jungle color is a bit much for some of us – it feels like you’re in the military waiting for your reinforcements – but others didn’t really care. It’s a bit heavier than others on the list and appears to be quite durable to say the least, so it should hold up over several years of hard rolling.
One thing of note was the sleeves run a bit short on just about everyone on the team. Some people like it that way though, so that is more of a taste issue I believe. If you don’t mind a thicker Gi then this one is probably a good option to have in your gear bag. Overall this isn’t a bad option in the higher tier price range and may be the best BJJ Gi for stocky build rollers out there.
Price: starts at $175 USD
Color Options: black
- Light weight
- Air flow
- Careful when drying
Fuji makes another appearance on our list of the best BJJ Gi options of 2024 with the Everyday Porrada. What can we say, this BJJ Gi is aptly named and can be worn everyday for training, sparring and even competition. This is likely the best lightweight BJJ Gi on the market in 2024 with 350g pearl weave as opposed to the more common 500g.
This also likely makes it the best BJJ Gi for big guys who sweat a bit more than the rest. The air vents really help with that as well.
It definitely fits true to size, but be wary about washing it in hot water as it will shrink and a couple of them ended up with fuzz balls all over them (not sure why).
It definitely stays in place well while rolling hard and the minimalist logo placement in lue of the massive billboard style of other Gis is a welcome change, especially if you want to add patches to your Gi.
Is it the best BJJ Gi in the world? Maybe not, but this Gi will do you right whether you are simply training on the daily or competing in an IBJJF tournament. All around a great buy.
The Best BJJ Gi Brands
Fuji is a staple in the BJJ world and they put out the best BJJ Gi options on the market regularly. Their name is synonymous with quality in the industry.
Durable, long lasting and well designed are all terms that come to mind when you mention Vulkan. The company doesn’t disappoint in the premium market.
Not quite as well known, but still need to be mentioned when it comes to the best BJJ Gi options around. Great lightweight options and good quality all around.
If you roll, then you have likely heard of BJJ religion. Easily a candidate for the best BJJ Gi maker in the industry. These BJJ Gis will be a regular sighting on mats around the globe.
The Best BJJ Gi Frequently Asked Questions
Does the color of your Gi matter in BJJ?
No, the color does not matter. The only thing that matters is that you have the best BJJ Gi. Belt colors are the only thing that carry meaning in BJJ. Some of the best BJJ Gi colors to have on hand are white and black for competition, though you can generally wear whatever color you like.
What is the best beginner BJJ Gi?
In terms of the best beginner BJJ Gi, Reddit users tend to favor Fuji, though BJJ Religion and Vulkan often come up in discussion as well. It’s ultimately up to the student, their budget and personal comforts.
Can you wear any type of Gi to BJJ?
In general the best BJJ Gi is the type specifically designed for the practice. Judo and especially Karate or Taekwondo Gis will easily tear when rolling in BJJ. BJJ Gis are much thicker and more hardy for better grip when attempting to improve position or submit your opponent.
Can you wear socks in Gi BJJ?
No. Socks would make it very difficult for you in BJJ. The only clothing you will need is the best BJJ Gi you can get your hands on, underwear of course and possibly a rash guard depending on personal taste.
